Risky & Adventurous selfies have resulted in several accidents & deaths around the world. Here are some of the stories…
A 29-year-old pilot at the controls of the Cessna 150, took off on a night flight with 6 miles of visibility, in Watkins, Colorado. The Cessna reached an altitude of 740 feet agl before making a sharp turn, descending at 1,900 feet per minute and crashing into a field, killing the pilot and his passenger. NTSB investigators say video evidence of an earlier flight showed that the pilot and passenger were "taking self-photographs with their cell phones and, during the night flight, using the camera's flash function.
A 9-year old boy and his middle-aged father drowned in a canal, while taking a selfie in Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, India. Abhinav (9) along with his brother Aman (11) and their father, were sitting on a pipe over a canal and taking selfies, when Abhinav lost his balance and fell into the canal. Sanjay (father) and Aman immediately jumped into the water to rescue Abhinav. Aman was saved somehow, but Abhinav and his father lost their lives.
A 21-year old man from Southern Spain died of electrocution while trying to take a selfie on top of a train in Andujar in Spain. Another friend survived the electrical shock and remained in serious condition at a local hospital.
Teenager Xenia Ignatyeva (17) plunged 30 feet to her death as she climbed onto a railway bridge in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, to take a selfie. She was a month short of her 18th birthday when she fell, and was hit by 1500 volts as she was electrocuted when she tried to grab live wires.
Courtney Sanford (32) from North Carolina, crashed her car head-on into a truck and died, moments after posting her selfie on Facebook. She was on her way to work at the time, and police said they found no evidence that drink, drugs or speed were factors in the collision.
Jadiel, a rapper from Puerto Rico, was going for a ride on his motorcycle and snapped a selfie before he left. Just moments later, Jadiel had lost control of his motorcycle and ended up in the path of an oncoming vehicle. He died in May 2014.
16-year old Edwin was instantly killed by a speeding train in Kerala, India, while posing for a selfie on the track. He wasn't fast enough and got ran over by the speeding train as he slipped.
Abhilash (32), a native of Eruva, India, died while making a video selfie enacting his death by hanging, that he was planning to post later on Facebook. He apparently posted similar videos on Facebook in the past.
Bride to be, Collette Moreno (26), killed in head-on car crash while travelling as passenger with her best friend, Ashely Theobald. Collette died moments after taking a selfie. She and her friend were en route to bachelorette party in Missouri. Moreno was the mother of a 5-year old boy.
Italian teenager Isabella Fracchiolla (16) plunges off wall, trying to take a selfie during a school trip to the seaside town of Taranto. The school girl suffered injuries to her femur, pelvis and head and was rushed to the hospital but died five days later.
Karen Hernandez (14) was standing along the riverbank of the El Tunal River in Mexico, trying to take a selfie. She drowned after falling into the river stream. The teenager was at a picnic with her classmates. At a certain point she left the group with one of her friends towards the riverbank to snap few selfies. She put her feet into the water but the torrent dragged her deep into a deep-water hole and she was never able to resurface again. Her lifeless body was recovered about an hour later by professional divers.
3rd year student Christine Rosello (14), fell down a flight of stairs at her high school in Manila, Philippines, while taking a selfie with her classmate. Rosello sustained broken bones and had an injury at the back of the head. Her broken bones also pierced her kidney and she died few days later.
Mexican man, Oscar Otero Aguilar (21), died while taking a selfie with a loaded gun that accidentally went off. Apparently he had been playing around with the borrowed gun and decided to take a selfie without realising it was loaded. Aguilar died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
A Polish couple died after falling from the cliffs at the popular tourist destination, Cabo da Roca in Portugal, while apparently trying to take selfies. Their kids, aged 5 & 6, were taken under care by Polish diplomats.
An engineering student, Varsha Alva, was taking a selfie with a friend, at a blind curve on a railway track near Mangalore, India, when a train came speeding around the corner and hit her, killing her instantly. Her friend Rachana sustained injuries. The impact of the train hitting Varsha from the rear was such that her entire skull was ripped apart.
18-year old engineering student ChezkaAgas posed for a group birthday selfie on the beach, in Ilocus Norte, Philippines, and was struck by a huge wave that drowned her. The group was trying to take a picture in front of the huge Bangui windmills when massive waves struck them. Agas was reportedly brought to the hospital immediately, with 8 others injured students, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Polish medical student, SylwiaRajchel (23), from the city of Lublin, was on a holiday in Seville, Spain, when she tried to take a photo of herself on the famous Puente de Trianabridge. She slipped while balancing on the ledge of the bridge and fell off. She died soon after arriving at the hospital. Sylwia studied nursing at the University of of Medicine in Posada, a village in Southern Poland.
An Oregon man was fatally struck and killed by an Amtrak train, as he posed for a selfie on the tracks. The man was on a trip from Tacoma to Portland when he stopped beside a river, to smoke and snap photos with an unnamed woman. The train stuck the man as the two posed for a photo and he died at the scene. The woman escaped unharmed.
Anna Ursu (18), posed with a friend for an 'ultimate' snap on top of a train, in the north-eastern Romanian city of Iasi, when her leg touched a live wire above, sending an electrical surge of unto 27,000 volts through her body. Her friend was reportedly blown off the train by the force of the current. A passerby put his own life at risk by scrambling on the top of the carriage to put out the girl's burning clothes before calling the emergency services. Both teens were airlifted to hospital but Anna who had over 50% of burns over her body later died.
